Now, now, now….too much caffeine, too much fifa 11, too much of everything. It’s two am and I have managed to get a hold of this picture of Miel somewhere in the desktop.
I remember this day back in September during the recently concluded Pacific Kaos 2 in Daet, Camarines Norte. This was the race day, the temperature that day started out like April summer madness in mid September. As the heats went on the weather decided to make a wild U turn. I was watching the heats along with Juan at the top of the hill when the clear blue sky was quickly blanketed by thick gray booming clouds. In a matter of 4-10 minutes thick raindrops were sent our way. This is Southeast Asia at its truest form, weather that can make a spin move like Shaq’s “black tornado” in an instant.
We all ran for shelter in a dilapidated compound to have lunch, discuss and wait for the rain to pass. During this time discussions about having a wet race was being seriously deliberated for safety reasons by the event organizers and racers. And with the discussions, it resulted in majority of the racers calling for a wet race. Common knowledge among the racers is that there will be no traction if your wheels don’t have grooves. Many of the racers were not equipped with rain wheels at the time. So what was the solution??? DIY rain wheels! Above will be a shot of Miel putting grooves using a swiss knife I think. The fun I had while I was watching the racers do guerilla rain wheels was the expression on the faces of the racers while their wheels are being sliced. I can say that most of them were grimacing in pain while their 3k-4k php wheels were being manhandled! Agony after agony…
This is how we do it in the rain in the Philippines…
